INTRODUCTION - "Language is the armory of the human mind" - Samuel Taylor Coleridge The above quote makes us understand of how knowing or learning new languages helps us to connect socially and culturally. Sociolinguistics is the study of the relationship between language and society. It is concerned with how language use interacts with, or is affected by, social factors such as gender, ethnicity, age or social class, for instance. It explains why people speak differently in different social contexts and the effect of social factors and they are concerned with identifying the social functions of language and the way they are used to convey social meanings.
REGIONAL AND SOCIAL DIALECTS Regional Dialects :- The Regional dialect whose characteristics are limited by space. Often called Dialect Area. This dialect is usually grown in a particular area, meaning that people outside the region will not understand the dialect in question. Social Dialects:- The dialect spoken by a particular social group. For example, people in the Cardboard definitely have different dialects with people outside the palace Or people in the community office dialect definitely different from those that exist in the market community.
FACTORS OF LANGUAGE VARIATION: Linguistic is the central of the study of language use. Variability is inherent in the human language Example: A single speaker will use different linguistic forms on different occasions and different speakers of a language will express the same meanings using different forms. Most of this variation is highly systematic speakers of a language make choice in word choice, pronunciation and grammar depending on a number of non- linguistic factors. These factors included the speakers purpose in communication the relationship between the speaker and hearer, various demographic and affiliation that a speaker can have and production circumstances. In fact it is impossible to study the language forms used in natural texts without being confronted with the issue of linguistic variability.
Everyone speaks at least one language, and probably most people in the world speak more than one. Even Indians, most of whom speak only Hindi, usually know more than one dialect. Certainly no one talks exactly the same way at all times: You are unlikely to speak to your boss in the style (or vocabulary) that you'd use in talking to the idiot who just rammed your car from behind. MULTILINGUAL SPEECH - Sociolinguistics examines all aspects of the relationship between language and society. Sociolinguistic research in multilingual communities or multilingual speech. Children are amazing! They master most of their speech and language skills in their first five to six years of life. Additionally, many children around the world become competent communicators in more than one language. Multilingualism is used as an overarching term for bilingualism and multilingualism. "Children who are multilingual are able to comprehend and/or produce two or more languages in oral, manual, or written form with at least a basic level of functional proficiency or use. examples - states like Maharashtra where children speak more than three or four languages like Hindi ,English ,Marathi, Punjabi and Gujarati etc.
According to the Oxford dictionary,the study of language in relation to social factors, including differences of regional, class, and occupational dialect, gender differences, and bilingualism.
It is a descriptive study of the effect of any and all aspects of society, including cultural norms, expectations, and context, on the way language is used, and society's effect on language. It differs from sociology of language, which focuses on the effect of language on society .It also studies how language varieties differ between groups separated by certain social variables i.e age groups, religion, status, gender and level of education is used to categorize individuals in social or socioeconomic classes. As the usage of a language varies from place to place, language usage also varies among social classes, and it is these socioliects that sociolinguistics studies.
Language Accent Aspect :- Accent is a mode of pronunciation associated with nation , region, locality or social group. Accent is the soul of language it gives it to feeling . Accent typically differ in quality of voice ,stress on word, stress on vowels and consonants. For instance A speaker speaks their mother tongue in their own accent when he/she will speak foreign language, the influence of mother tongue accent will be shown on that language in the form of accent.
All together we can say that every language has it own apparel in it, sociolinguistics is a very broad band which can be examined through close examination and good understanding of language which help us to find out the variation in inbuilt of the language give relationship with the community.
